Dr. Karen Alvarez

Retired Assistant Superintendent
Canada: British Columbia Hub | NORTH AMERICA

I have worked in the education system for 30 years, in various roles including teacher, vice principal and principal, faculty associate at Simon Fraser University, District Principal, and Assistant Superintendent. I have extensive experience leading change in curriculum and assessment, early learning, and school safety. I spent most of my career in the Surrey school district, and I recently retired from my position as assistant superintendent in the Mission school district.

I completed Master Practitioner training in 2022 and Holding Space in 2023. I am happy to continue learning and supporting the growth of Compassionate Systems in British Columbia, as a director of the newly formed B.C. Centre for Systems Awareness.

I recently completed my doctoral dissertation on leading to support wholism (body, mind, heart, and spirit) in education. My research was influenced by Indigenous worldviews, contemplative practices, and Compassionate Systems Leadership. I am currently learning to teach meditation in a two-year course through Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP) with teachers Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield.
