Santa Clarita Valley International Charter School – Castaic, California, USA
Center for Systems Awareness SITE
The Santa Clarita Valley International Charter School (SCVi) is part of the iLEAD network of schools, located in Castaic, California.
SCVi and iLEAD schools started working with the Compassionate Systems Framework with K-12 children, administrators, and the community. Over the course of two years, we introduced system thinking tools, a compassionate integrity framework and interactive climate simulations from MIT to increase empathy, cultivate compassion and integrate systems thinking habits as a framework for our projects.
As a project-based learning school and network, we have studied various topics such as the role of the United Nations and others in addressing sustainability, scarcity of resources, climate changes, poverty, homelessness, and restorative practices by targeting the core of compassion, empathy, awareness, and action.
We found using the Compassionate Systems Framework led to awareness, increased levels of empathy, compassion as well as developing systems for greater communication, collaboration, teaming and acting upon identified problem areas locally, nationally and globally.
