Our Approach

Group of people sitting and speaking with one another in small circles in chairs.

Over the past year, of prototyping our work in Site Development in Humboldt and Ventura Counties in California, we have gained a multitude of insights. Based on those insights and feedback from educators, administrators, county offices, students and master practitioners we have created a more comprehensive and structured approach for Site Development to begin August 2024.

As you know, structure shapes behavior, and systems produce the outcomes they are designed to produce. We see this moment in the refinement of site development work as an invitation to use cycles of inquiry to internalize and reflect on compassionate systems, prepare learning experiences for students, and assess the impact of those lessons.

This new structure allows for collaboration across school teams, districts and counties.  The structured times for calls and visits allow educators to plan their busy days well in advance and not spend time on scheduling, with enough calls to offer the flexibility of missing when absolutely necessary. The learning is ongoing throughout the program and allows participants to experiment with the tools for themselves and their students.

Program Overview

The program is designed as a ten-month journey built around a community of educators, specifically designed for schools and learning sites who want to develop the use of compassionate systems tools and practices in their work context/setting. This fully supportive program enables schools to establish a team of compassionate systems partners who use the cycle of inquiry to explore and establish the growth of compassionate systems in their site. Teams consist of 2-15  people and represent a variety of roles, including at least one person in a leadership position who can make essential decisions to support the work appropriately. Participants in leadership positions may be coaches, administrators, or lead teachers. One-person teams will be considered in circumstances where a larger team is not possible due to the site’s size.  The cohort of this program consists of core teams from multiple schools, thus creating a professional community of practice that shares learning across school sites.

Participants

This program is offered to teachers, educators, and administrators working in a school site who are able to join the program in its entirety, as well as to school and wellness counselors, expanded learning providers, and site coordinators. No prior experience with Compassionate Systems is required. Each cohort will be composed of around 35-65 participants, with up to 10 schools from each county.

Hybrid Program Structure

Launch Workshop

The program begins with a 2-day launch workshop in August 2024 led by the Center Site Development Team.

  • Online: August 5 and 6, 2024
  • Ventura County: August 15 and 16, 2024

The in-person workshop will be tailored to the educator's needs. It will resemble the Foundations I – Introduction to Compassionate Systems workshops, but will focus more on direct application in the classroom and leave more time for practice to help build educators' confidence and conceptual knowledge. The workshop will include sections from Master Practitioners in the field with more examples of how the work has been applied in a multitude of settings.   Focusing on check-ins, journaling, grounding and emotional literacy, educators will leave feeling empowered and confident to gradually integrate compassionate systems  practices as soon as the school year begins. This will be the first offering in a cycle of workshops that will allow participants to continue their journey in the following years if desired.

Student engagement

Each site will work in collaboration with the Site Development Team to develop student integration that fits within the school’s context.

Virtual Learning Community Calls

11 Virtual 90-minute Community Calls held on Thursdays 3:30-5:00 pm PST throughout the 10 months led by the Center for Systems Awareness' Site Development Team.  Support will include Master Practitioners and Center Staff.
