My name is Sirys Vega. I am a general ed teacher at Public School 68, The Port Richmond School for Visionary Learning. My journey began in 2013 when I graduated from the College of Staten Island with a bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education. Shortly after, I earned my master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in 2019.

Teaching in the heart of Port Richmond has allowed me to teach in a community that I have lived in for most of my life, a community where students see themselves in me. Likewise, my classroom is a community where students feel safe and are willing to take risks in their learning. Having courageous conversations helps grow community in my classroom because students know that they can enter my classroom ready to share their thoughts and feelings.

I believe that each student brings their history and knowledge to the classroom. From the first day of school, I get to know my students as both learners and people to help them feel seen and valued when they enter our classroom. As the Brain Power Leader, I strive to create a supportive and positive classroom environment that fosters healthy, happy, and focused students! It is also my passion to help students fall in love with learning through the power of reading!
