Robert Clifton

Superintendent of Schools
School District 92: Nisga’a
Canada:  British Columbia | North America

Liimiiuum Hala’ayt (Singing Shaman) walks in many worlds. As the eldest grandchild on both sides of their family, Robert carries the responsibility of deep-rooted relationships and intergenerational wisdom. They come from two distinct ancestral worldviews: their maternal great-grandparents migrated to Canada from Norway, while their paternal lineage is Gitga’at, Ts’msyen; First Peoples connected to their land and place for thousands of years.

Through a journey of self-awareness and healing, Robert has come to understand that knowing who you are and where you come from helps individuals orient themselves toward where they are going, growing into who they are meant to be. This understanding informs their leadership, which is grounded in Indigenous values, relational accountability, and systems awareness.

With over 35 years of experience facilitating transformational learning spaces, Robert has worked to disrupt traditional teacher-student paradigms, fostering co-agency and collective flourishing. They cultivate learner-to-learner relationships where purpose, belonging, and emotional resonance guide growth for the individual, the community, and future generations. They view learning as a sacred connection between mind, body, heart, and spirit, and invite learners to see themselves in the story through their relationships with time, space, land, place, people, spirit, sea, and sky.

Liimiiuum Hala’ayt’s passion lies in transforming education systems constrained by procedural and transactional models into ones that are experiential, relational, and compassionate. This shift calls for nourishing relationships, honouring diverse worldviews, and creating spaces where learners and leaders engage in both learning and unlearning. Their approach integrates Indigenous ways of knowing, systems sensing and thinking, and emotional literacy to cultivate heartful presence and systemic integrity.

Robert is currently the Superintendent of Schools for Nisga’a School District 92, where they are writing a new chapter of transformation by walking alongside those who are passionate about creating lasting impact through relational transformation of self and systems, so that all thrive.
