Mia Moutray

Principal
School District 91: Nechako Lakes
Canada: British Columbia | North America

Mia lives in a small town called Vanderhoof in the beautiful Saik’uz Territory in the center of BC, Canada. She moved there in 1997 from Sweden, where she was born and raised. She is married with two grown children and an adopted German Shepherd. Mia and her partner Kevin spend a significant amount of their spare time on the land, living and learning.

Mia is the Principal of Sinkut View Elementary and has enjoyed being in a formal leadership role since 2022. Previously, she was a grade 8 teacher in a Middle Years program. That is when she got to know Leona Prince and had the privilege of being part of Leona’s first cohort of the three year long Indigenous Education Teacher Lead program.

She was also a contributor to the Koh-Learning in Our Watersheds initiative—a partnership between SD91 and the University of Northern BC that focused on transforming education by connecting students with their local environments. Furthermore, she has been involved in the School District 91 Student Voice team, playing a role in empowering students, amplifying youth voices, and fostering leadership.

In addition, Mia is a network leader in the Network of Inquiry and Indigenous Education (NOIIE)—a global network founded in BC dedicated to equity, Indigenous ways of knowing, and innovative, student-centered learning.

Land-Based Learning and Student Voice are an ongoing personal and professional journey for Mia. Every day, she works on creating authentic and meaningful connections between learners, communities, and the land always from the perspective of being a learner herself. Compassionate Systems thinking is supporting this learning in so many ways.

Mia is dedicated to student success, community well-being, and transformative educational leadership.
