Monterey Peninsula Unified School District
California Hub | USA

Alan is a passionate and award-winning Educational Leader. He has over 20 years of experience working in education, with many of those years as a site leader serving both Elementary and Secondary students. Alan currently works at the Central Office Level with a focus on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support which includes working with K-12 site leaders on reducing chronic absenteeism, alternatives to suspension, and a systemic approach to the prevention of and response to substance abuse.

In his work as a site leader in both Traditional and Alternative settings, Alan was recognized for his work in assessment practices, grading reform, and the implementation of restorative practices. In addition to his work in other non-profit and community leadership positions, Alan’s approach is also informed by his work as an adjunct professor of pedagogy and K-12 leadership at California State University, Monterey Bay. Along with his passion for serving “at-promise” students, Alan speaks Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese and spent three years living in Latin America working with NGOs in the fields of education and development and promoting international service-learning.

His work as a leader has been shaped by his time spent studying and applying the Compassionate Systems Framework in order to address the complex and challenging nature of Systems Change. Alan finds great meaning in his work and deeply appreciates collaborative efforts with educational leaders and school staff to support processes of continuous improvement and systemic change. He believes that meaningful systems change begins with the capacity to see both the individual and the larger system which enables practitioners to foster the awareness, compassion, and collaboration needed to improve outcomes for students, families, and communities.
